The Eckman - Hilton argument and higher operads

چکیده
To the memory of my father. Abstract The classical Eckmann-Hilton argument shows that two monoid structures on a set, such that one is a homomorphism for the other, coincide and, moreover, the resulting monoid is commutative. This argument immediately gives a proof of the commutativity of the higher homotopy groups. A reformulation of this argument in the language of higher categories is: suppose we have a one object, one arrow 2-category, then its Hom-set is a commutative monoid. A similar argument due to A.Joyal and R.Street shows that a one object, one arrow tricategory is 'the same' as a braided monoidal category. In this paper we begin to investigate how one can extend this argument to arbitrary dimension. We provide a simple categorical scheme which allows us to formalise the Eckman-Hilton type argument in terms of the calculation of left Kan extensions in an appropriate 2-category. Then we apply this scheme to the case of n-operads in the author's sense and classical symmetric operads. We demonstrate that there exists a functor of symmetrisation Symn from a certain subcategory of n-operads to the category of symmetric operads such that the category of one object, one arrow ,. .. , one (n − 1)-arrow algebras of A is isomorphic to the category of algebras of Symn(A). Under some mild conditions, we present an explicit formula for Symn(A) which involves taking the colimit over a remarkable categorical symmetric operad. We will consider some applications of the methods developed to the theory of n-fold loop spaces in the second paper of this series.

$omega$-Operads of coendomorphisms and fractal $omega$-operads for higher structures
In this article we introduce the notion of textit{Fractal $omega$-operad} emerging from a natural $omega$-operad associated to any coglobular object in the category of higher operads in Batanin's sense, which in fact is a coendomorphism $omega$-operads. We have in mind coglobular object of higher operads which algebras are kind of higher transformations. It follows that this natural $omeg...
متن کاملOperads of higher transformations for globular sets and for higher magmas
In this article we discuss examples of fractal $omega$-operads. Thus we show that there is an $omega$-operadic approach to explain existence of the globular set of globular setsfootnote{Globular sets are also called $omega$-graphs by the French School.}, the reflexive globular set of reflexive globular sets, the $omega$-magma of $omega$-magmas, and also the reflexive $omega$-magma ...
متن کاملAlgebras of higher operads as enriched categories II
One of the open problems in higher category theory is the systematic construction of the higher dimensional analogues of the Gray tensor product. In this paper we continue the work of [7] to adapt the machinery of globular operads [4] to this task. The resulting theory includes the Gray tensor product of 2-categories and the Crans tensor product [12] of Gray categories. Moreover much of the pre...
متن کاملSteps toward the weak higher category of weak higher categories in the globular setting
We start this article by rebuilding higher operads of weak higher transformations, and correct those in cite{Cambat}. As in cite{Cambat} we propose an operadic approach for weak higher $n$-transformations, for each $ninmathbb{N}$, where such weak higher $n$-transformations are seen as algebras for specific contractible higher operads. The last chapter of this article asserts that, up to precise...
متن کاملExact Sequences and Closed Model Categories
For every closed model category with zero object, Quillen gave the construction of Eckman-Hilton and Puppe sequences. In this paper, we remove the hypothesis of the existence of zero object and construct (using the category over the initial object or the category under the final object) these sequences for unpointed model categories. We illustrate the power of this result in abstract homotopy t...
